County commissioners are seeking qualifications from engineering firms that can provide the expertise needed to install solar panels on the courthouse annex as well as make the courthouse in Apalachicola and the Carrabelle Municipal Complex more energy efficient.
The county is required to retain the services of an engineering firm as part of a half million dollar federal energy conservation grant.
That will pay for new windows at the Franklin County Courthouse in Apalachicola and the installation of solar panels at the courthouse annex.
It will also pay to make the Carrabelle Municipal Complex more energy efficient.
County administrator Alan Pierce said the county may have to hire more than one engineering firm to do al the work, because it will likely take an electrical engineer for the solar panels and an architectural engineer to properly install the windows in the historic courthouse.
Local engineering firms are being urged to provide qualifications but because this is a federal grant the county cannot favor a local firm during the bid process.
