Cranklin County commissioners oppose closing of Panama City PHEREC Lab

Franklin County commissioners are opposing plans to move a mosquito lab in Panama City to Vero Beach.
The Public Health Entomology Research and Education Center, also known as the PHEREC lab is a state-funded research center operated through FAMU.
The center studies biting insects like mosquitoes, biting flies, and ticks and works on new methods of insect control.
It also serves as a training center for students, teachers, and pest control professionals.
The center has provided training and resources for mosquito control departments, and has proved very useful for the Franklin County Mosquito control department.
If the lab is closed, local workers would have to travel further for training.
Franklin County commissioners issued a resolution on Tuesday opposing the closing of the PHEREC lab.
The action was taken at the request of mosquito control directors from around North Florida.
