Firefighters were called to a house fire on St. George Island Monday.
The fire damaged the home of Rusty Raffnael on East Sawyer Street.
Fire chief Jay Abbott said it was a grease fire that started in the kitchen at about 10:15 Monday morning.
Firefighters from St. George Island, Eastpoint and Apalachicola responded to the call and were able to save the home, though there was a lot of damage.
There was a lot of interior damage caused by the fire, and portions of the homes ceiling fell down because of the water the fire department used to stop the blaze.
Chief Abbott said that firefighters have been seeing more fires recently and many of the homes did not even have a fire extinguisher in them.
Firefighters recommend that all homes have at least a 5 pound fire extinguisher to put out small fires.
And homeowners are also reminded to be extremely careful during the coldest months of the year.
If you are using a space heater make sure it is kept away from curtains or any flammable material.
And if you don’t already have smoke alarms you should buy them – if you do you should check the batteries.
