Franklin County commissioners are looking at tightening security at their meetings in light of the recent school board shooting in Panama City.
Commissioner Smokey Parrish said he would like the board to tighten safety protocols which will likely include having people attending county commission meetings go through the metal detector already installed at the county’s meeting room.
Commissioner Parrish said the county should also insure that a sheriff’s officer provide security at each meeting.
A deputy is generally on site when the county holds morning meetings in Apalachicola, but none attended this week’s night meeting in Carrabelle.
Commissioners said they would also look at other steps to make the meetings safer.
The local board is one of many in the area discussing tighter security measures after a December 14th incident at a Bay County School Board meeting where a man named Clay Duke confronted the board with a gun before he was shot and ultimately killed himself.
