Franklin County takes first steps toward new hospital

Franklin County is taking its first steps toward building a new hospital in Apalachicola.
The county commission last week agreed to begin looking for an architect for the project.
Having an architect under contract is a necessary step for the county to get federal funding for the hospital project.
They are currently seeking a 14 million dollar loan from the USDA to fund the construction – they have already learned that the county is eligible for the money.
It could take months for the loan process to complete, but by starting the process now the county can lock an interest rate of 3.75 percent.
Hospital CEO Chuck Colvert said the new hospital will be built in Apalachicola around the existing building, and once complete the old hospital will be used for office space.
Commissioner Bevin Putnal said beginning the process for a new hospital may be one of the most important moves this county has ever done.
