Richard Bickel The State of Florida has invited Apalachicola photojournalist Richard Bickel to exhibit his work at the state capitol from January 17th through April 17th 2011. The work shown will be selected from Richard’s two Apalachicola books, and will also include a number of previously unpublished local images taken within the last year. The solo exhibit will span the entire top floor of the capitol building which functions as a fine art gallery, and include approximately forty-five of Richard’s black-and-white documentary images. Sandy Shaughnessy, Florida Director of Cultural affairs organized the exhibit “to bring attention to the treasure that is Apalachicola.” In particular, Shaughnessy wanted the new governor, Rick Scott, to be introduced to the Bay and its people through Richard’s photography. This is Richard’s third exhibit of Apalachicola images in Tallahassee -- he previously displayed his work at the Brogan Museum and in Governor Jeb Bush’s offices -- and it is his seventh exhibition of Apalachicola images throughout the South. His Apalachicola work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Houston Chronicle. This past summer, his photographs of oil spill preparations on Apalachicola Bay were published by Die Zeit, a leading German paper, and this coming spring an article in Men’s Journal will include Richard’s Apalachicola images. | Directors Column Anita Grove, Executive Director Happy New Year!
