Red Cross gets 30K grant from Allstate Foundation

The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross has received a 30 thousand dollar grant from the Allstate Foundation to help educate Big Bend residents to prepare for and respond to disasters.
The money will help fund the Capital Area Chapter’s Catastrophe Preparedness and Response Program which helps prepare people for dealing with potential disasters such as fires, tornadoes and hurricanes.
In 2009, the program aided over 148,000 Big Bend citizens.
The program focuses on raising disaster awareness amongst all age groups, but specifically children, using services like the Fire Weather House, disaster preparedness classes, and post disaster response and assistance.
The “Fire Weather House” is a mobile trailer which has been used at local schools and festivals, which demonstrates both fire and weather safety and simulates severe weather events such as a hurricane or tornado.
Grant funds will also fund the program’s disaster education initiatives for school age children in the Big Bend
