A flock of Whooping cranes ended their long journey from Wisconsin this week and were welcomed to Wakulla County by about 900 people as they did a fly-over over St. Marks.
The 11 young whooping cranes have traveled nearly 60 days and over 1,000 miles from Wisconsin, leaving their summer home on October 15th.
The birds have been following ultralight planes on their migration and while half of the cranes will winter at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge the rest are traveling further south into central Florida.
The St. Marks refuge has a three-acre pen with two ponds to provide protective habitat for the birds where they will stay until they migrate back to Wisconsin sometime around the end of March.
