2 month shallow water grouper fishing ban begins February 1st

Recreational fishermen will face a two month closure on shallow water grouper fishing beginning February 1st.

Species that will be off-limits until March the 31st include gag, black, red, yellowfin, scamp, yellowmouth, rock hind and red hind.

The closure is in effect in all Gulf of Mexico waters off Florida, except off Monroe County.
Recreational gag grouper fishing has been closed in Gulf federal waters since January 1st.
The two month closure coincides with the gag grouper spawning season to help protect the species from overfishing.
