Hundreds of people came out to take part in the 1st annual Oyster Cook-off to raise money for the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department.
Warm January weather on Saturday meant people could sit outside, listen to the live music, and enjoy the smells of various oyster dishes.
15 teams took part in the cook-off, and dishes varied from oyster stuffing and oyster chowder to a number of "baked in the half-shell" dishes.
No two were the same.
The three judges included local realtor and television chef Jerry Thompson, Department of Agriculture chef Justin Timieri, and me.
A number of local restaurants were among the contestants as were the Eastpoint Fire Department, The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the St. George Island Civic Club.
But the day went to John Hutchison of Apalachicola who said he has worked at restaurants before but just really likes to cook.
Jeff Ilardi of Eastpoint took second place, and the Owl Cafe' came in third.
We should have earning numbers from the event later this week.
