Blue crab fishing moratorium ends Friday

The moratorium on fishing for blue crabs with traps in the Apalachicola Bay will end on Friday.
The state approved the 10 day closure as a way to remove abandoned blue crab traps from the Bay where they damage sensitive habitats and pose navigational hazards to boaters.
Abandoned crab traps also continue to trap crabs and fish when they are not maintained.
The current closure includes waters from Franklin County to the Florida/ Alabama border- it extends from the shoreline out to 3 nautical miles and includes all inland waters in the regions.
After the closure ends, it will be 2013 before the next closure.
The state agreed last year to only close the waters every two years instead of annually so it doesn’t have such a large impact on commercial crabbers.
