County considers change to critcal shoreline rules

Franklin County commissioners will hold a public hearing next month to consider a possible change in the wording of its critical shoreline rules.
The Critical shoreline is the first 50 feet of land from the shore – in Franklin County its illegal to build in that area.
The county plans to add language to its rules that if someone applies to build on a waterfront lot that the county will send someone out to mark the boundary of the critical shoreline.
County planner Alan Pierce said the county already provides the service but this will formalize the process.
County officials say they hope the new language will help encourage builders to protect the coastline by adopting “living shoreline” standards using natural vegetation and rock instead of building seawalls.
