Franklin County joins call for Florida University to join Gulf of Mexico study

Franklin County commissioners have added their support to a request that a Florida University be part of a research team to study the effects of the BP oil spill.
The board took the action Tuesday at the request of Escambia county commissioner Grover Robinson.
Mister Robinson has also asked that six other coastal North Florida counties sign on to the request.
Mister Robinson said he would like to see researchers from the University of West Florida be made part of a team to do a “near-shore scientific study of the Gulf of Mexico.”
That study is currently being led by Temple University out of Pennsylvania.
Franklin County Commissioners said they feel a Florida University would have more expertise about the Gulf than one out of Pennsylvania and asked that the University of West Florida not only be part of the study but that they be made the lead organization in the study.
