The Northwest Florida Water Management District said it planted a record number of trees and ground cover plants across North Florida in 2010.
Reforestation and ground cover restoration are part of the district’s effort to restore the natural water flow in North Florida that has been damaged by years of human activity.
Last year the District hand planted over 1.6 million longleaf pines and 35,000 mixed hardwood and cypress trees on 2800 acres in Bay, Escambia, Liberty, Santa Rosa and Washington counties.
Seeds from at least 45 native plant species were released in areas that received prescribed burns.
Last year also marked the planting of the 10 millionth longleaf pine and 5 millionth groundcover plug since 1994.
