State passes gun law, county sees another attack on county authority

Franklin County commissioners are a little steamed that the state has taken away its power to approved local gun rules.

The governor signed a law this year that bans local governments from passing their own gun laws.

Gun rights advocates supported the bill because it makes it easier for gun owners to travel from one part of the state to another without worrying that they might be breaking a local gun law.

County attorney Michael Shuler said only one local law will have to be removed from the books – that deals with getting a concealed firearm license.

County commissioners say they are big defenders of gun rights, but this rule seems to be less about guns and more about state government taking away local authority.

Commissioner Pinki Jackel said local areas know best how to govern themselves and certain rules that are good for Franklin County are not good for Leon County or other areas.

Commissioner Smokey Parrish compared it to when the state took away the county’s power to approve local cable television franchises which has given the county much less leverage over the local cable system to the detriment of local customers.

But when the board heard the potential punishments for not doing away with the local gun law they quickly scheduled the public hearing.

Michael Shuler said the punishments could include removal from office, a 5 million dollar fine for the county and a 5000 dollar fine for commissioners.
