People waiting for health services to return to the
Carrabelle health Department might be waiting for a while.
The clinic was closed without warning in September to
much anger from residents and county commissioners.
Commissioners have been working ever since to have
the site reopened, but its not looking to hopeful.
County planner Alan Pierce along with Commission
Chairman Pinki Jackel met with state health department officials last month
where they were informed that the clinic has a minor mold problem that
they believe will be solved within 30 days.
But even after that services will return to the
building very slowly if at all.
The first service to return will likely be a WIC
representative one day a month.
Health Department officials said there is also a
dental program that could be placed in the Carrabelle building, but county
officials say there has been no commitment made to re-open the Clinic as
before.
County attorney Michael Shuler said his read on the
meeting is that the health department has no intention to provide primary care
from that location again.
The decision will impact the health department’s
bottom line.
The county commission was holding nearly 160 thousand
dollars which they planned to distribute when the Carrabelle location started
offering services again.
On Tuesday the board voted to take the bulk of that
money and give it to Weems memorial Hospital to help fund the Weems Medical
center East Clinic.
