Apalachicola bay
oyster harvesters are going to have more days a week they can work during the
summer season.
The Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission on Wednesday agreed to allow commercial oyster
harvesting 7 days a week beginning this year.
Previously,
harvest was not allowed on Fridays and Saturdays from June 1st through August
31st or on Saturdays and Sundays from September 1st through November the 15th.
The new
rules will go into effect June 1.
This
increased number of harvesting days was done in response to recent rule changes
that drastically cuts the number of hours that oystermen can work during the
summer months.
The
seven-day work week will hopefully allow Apalachicola Bay oyster
harvesters the ability to make up for some time lost in harvesting because of
the new earlier delivery times.
