SGI residents alerted to controlled burn on unit 4

St. George Island residents are being alerted to a controlled burn that will happen on the island sometime between today and February the 29th.

The exact date of the burn will depend on weather and other conditions.

The Florida Forest Service plans to do a controlled burn on state owned land in unit 4 in an area that borders East Pine Street from the bridge to 11th street east.

They expect a lot of smoke from the burn and are warning people with breathing problems to avoid that portion of the island when the burning is being done.

The controlled burn is being done to remove some of the undergrowth on the property to minimize the chances of a wildfire breaking out there.

People with questions or concerns about the controlled burn cal call Todd Schroeder with the Florida forest Service at 850-519-0666.
