Routine traffic stop turns into a car chase and drug bust

Two Apalachicola residents were arrested on drug and other charges Friday after leading Gulf County officers on a chase from Port St. Joe.

Phillip Austin Jaquinnton O’Neal and Quanteka Shenay Croom were taken into custody after a Gulf county deputy rear-ended their car to stop the chase.

O’Neal and Croom were initially pulled over in Gulf County on a minor traffic violation but fled the scene after being stopped.

The led sheriff’s deputy Richard lee Burkett on a chase along Highway 98 that ended at 15th street when Mister O’Neal tried to turn off the highway.

When he tried to make the turn at high speed he lost control of his 2007 Dodge and went into a counter-clockwise spin.

The deputies vehicle then hit the rear of the Dodge.

Mister O’Neal tried to flee on foot but was caught pretty quickly.

Miss Croom was arrested at the scene.

Officers found cocaine in the vehicle and charged the two with possession.

Mister O’Neal was also charged with felony reckless driving and felony fleeing and eluding.
