Great weather and a local group won - chili cookoff rocks!

For the first time in the 30 year history of the St. George Island Charity Chili Cook-off and Auction the event was won by a local group.

The Apalachicola volunteer Fire department took first place in the professional chili cook-off, earning it a 500 dollar cash prize and the opportunity to go to Las Vegas later this year to compete for 25 thousand dollars at the National chili cook-off.

The fire department beat out 42 other professional chili cooks to take the title.

2nd place and 300 dollars went to a group called “Grateful Red” out of Decatur, Georgia.

3rd place and 200 dollars was won by the “Chili Dawgs” out of Atlanta.

And while it might have been raining and worse in the rest of the country, it was blue skies over St. George Island.

The crowds were a little smaller than usual this year, more than likely driven off by weather reports of the severe weather that never happened.

But the crowd at the annual auction was good – and there were certainly plenty of people around the beer tent.

Joe Cope out of Destin won the Mister Hot Sauce title for the second year in a row, Summer Padgett from Perry was this year’s Miss Chili Pepper.

Hot Lips chili won the people choice award, possibly because they were selling jello shots.

You can see pictures of the winners and of the chili cookoff on the news page at oysterradio.com or on our facebook page.

The St. George Island Fire Department is still totaling the amount raised over the weekend through the cookoff and the charity auction and expect to release figures later this month.

All of the money raised on Saturday helps fund the St. George Island Fire Department and first responders unit – it makes up about half of their budget.
