County commissioners to consider ways to force landowners to remove safety hazards

County commissioners are looking at ways that they might be able to force some property owners to clean up their land.

The county has agreed to hold a public workshop later this year to consider either an MSBU or an ordinance, or possibly even a code enforcement office that will give the county some way to make property owners whose land poses a health hazard to he public to remove the danger.

The county is specifically trying to address an issue in Lanark Village in which a number of apartments were destroyed in a fire but the property owner has made no attempt to remove what’s left of the structure.

Commissioner Cheryl Sanders said the county has attempted to communicate with the property owners numerous times and numerous ways over the past two years with no luck - so now the county needs to create something with more teeth.

What that will be is still not known – but the board says it will bring the public into the discussion at a workshop later this year.
