County commissioners this week signed the
annual solid waste management work plan which will help offset the costs of
handling local solid waste.
The work plan spells out the activities
that will be undertaken using state grant money.
The grant used to provide Franklin
County
over 277 thousand dollars to help fund its solid waste operations, but in
recent years the grant amount has fallen to just 70 thousand dollars.
The money is provided annually to the 34 Florida
counties with fewer than 100 thousand residents.
Commissioners expect to see the amount
drop even further as the state requires counties to take on more of the cost of
operating their landfills.
So far the cuts have not had a major
impact on day to day operations at the landfill, but the county is concerned
that at some point the state cuts will force the county to either spend more
local tax dollars at the landfill or to begin cutting services.
