It's been an exciting year at NOAA fisheries. As we look forward to 2013, let's take a quick look at the top stories of 2012.

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has presented its highest honor-the Bob Mace Distinguished Service Award-to Assistant Special Agent in Charge Kenneth Hansen of NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement's Alaska Division.

What's it like to be in the field with ice seals? What kind of technology do we use to study them? Marine ecologist Peter Boveng answers these questions and more.

We are proposing measures that would reduce fishing mortality and effort in order to rebuild overfished Atlantic shark species while ensuring that a limited sustainable shark fishery can be maintained. There will be public hearings as well. Please comment by February 12, 2013.
Northeast
Council considering a process for allowing sectors to access year-round groundfish closed areas in fishing year 2013.

Fishing vessels issued a Federal moratorium permit for the summer flounder fishery may land summer flounder in New York until the quota is fully harvested.

We have closed the Elephant Trunk Area to all scallop fishing for 180 days through emergency action, from December 12, 2012, through June 10, 2013.

We announce fishing opportunities in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Regulatory Area.  Expressions of interest will be accepted through December 31, 2012.
Alaska
The Southeast Alaska Coastal Monitoring project forecasts a pink salmon harvest for 2013 of 54 million. The SECM forecast models have performed well in 6 of the 7 past harvest years, giving estimates that averaged within 7 percent of actual harvests.

In this article, the Resource Ecology and Fisheries Management Division summarizes some of the early findings of their mass balance food web model, which describes the key attributes of the eastern Chukchi Sea food web.
Northwest
The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Pacific Council) has begun its annual preseason management process for the 2013 ocean salmon fisheries. Please comment by March 31, 2013.

We propose establishing limits on commercial retention of bluefin tuna by U.S. fishing vessels operating in the Eastern Pacific Ocean in 2012 and 2013. Please comment by January 11, 2013.
Southwest
Scientists from the Southwest Fisheries Science Center are using a newly designed ROV to conduct a comprehensive survey of habitats throughout southern California. This will help them monitor the recovery of depleted groundfishes.
