Search continues for oysteman missing since his boat sank early this morning

2:44 PM The search is continuing for a local oysterman whose boat sank just off the St. George Island Bridge this morning. A Gulf County vessel joined the search at about 2 PM to help search the area around the sunken boat. Franklin County officials along with private boats have been searching the area since the boat went down at about 8:30 this morning. Officials have not released the names of the two people on board, but did say there was a woman and man on-board. They were headed out to harvest oysters. The woman was rescued by a private boat; the young man has not yet been found. There are still sheriff’s vehicles and some private cars parked along the St. George Island bridge so please drive slowly and carefully while crossing the bridge.

12:41 PM Just got back off the SGI bridge where sheriff's officials and FWC plus a few private boats continue to search for a young man whose boat sank this morning a few hundred yards west of the St. George Island bridge. Officials have not released the names of the two people on board, but did say there was a woman and man on-board. The boat sank around 8:30 this morning while the two were headed out to harvest oysters. The woman was rescued; the young man has not yet been found. The search is being made more difficult by strong winds and high waves. The sheriff's office has a boat on scene with sonar to search the bottom of the bay, FWC also had a helicopter on scene earlier, but it has since left the scene.

9:15 AM Emergency crews are located along the St. George Island bridge at this time looking for a local oysterman who's boat sank near the bridge this morning. The sheriff said two men were on board, one has been rescued. The search is continuing from the bridge and by boat for the second person. Please drive carefully if you are crossing the SGI bridge this morning, and pray for a good outcome to this sad event.
