Stand Up for the Apalachicola River and Bay!

Tuesday, August the 13th is “Stand Up for the Apalachicola River and Bay Day.”
County Commissioners approved a resolution designating the day for people to support the Apalachicola River and Bay by attending a public event at the Franklin county courthouse on Tuesday morning at 10AM.
That’s the same day the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will hold a field hearing in Apalachicola to examine the impacts of decreased water flows on the Apalachicola Bay and surrounding industries.
The purpose of Stand up for the Apalachicola River and Bay day is to get as many people as possible to the courthouse before the senate hearing so Senators can see how important the issue of water flow into the Bay is to residents and businesses.
It is also a way to draw as much media attention as possible to the issue.
The event will include a petition in support of the Bay as well as speakers on the courthouse steps.
Speakers will likely include local and state political leaders as well as seafood industry leaders.
The county has agreed to close the parking lot in front of the courthouse Annex to handle what will hopefully be a large crowd.
They will also put up tents to make it more comfortable for attendees.
Afterward people will be able to view the senate hearing from a video monitor at the Armory.

The county is also working to make the hearing available over the internet.
