Franklin County warning people about "Jury Duty Scam"

The Franklin County Sheriff s Office is alerting residents to another phone scam that’s been reported in the county.

This scam is called the "jury duty scam."

The premise is that an unknown person will call claiming to be a local Law Enforcement Officer.

He then informs the victims that they have missed jury duty and must immediately pay a fine or face arrest.

The suspect generally uses a phone application that makes his telephone number appear to be local.

The sheriff’s department wants to remind citizens that NO Law Enforcement Officer will ever call demanding money in this manner.

Should you be contacted by someone posing as anofficer demanding money, please contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 670-8500.

There are other phone scams to be aware of - some of the more popular include someone claiming to be a grandchild in some sort of trouble in a foreign country.

There is the Fake Check Scam where a stranger proposes to send the victim a check and have the victim wire money in return.

There are also Debt Collection Scams in which the victim receives an official sounding call from someone claiming to represent some fictitious company.

All of the scams have one thing in common – a stranger on the phone is trying to get financial information from you.

Again, if you feel like you are the victim of a telephone scam, contact the sheriff’s department at 670-8500.
