County Commissioners this week gave site plan approval for a new Camp Gordon Johnston World War two Museum building at Carrabelle beach.
The museum is currently housed in the old Carrabelle High school, but the foundation owns property on Highway 98 across the street from Carrabelle beach.
Their plan is to build a new 6000 square foot museum building there to put the museum on a main thoroughfare near a popular tourist location.
County Commissioners called the plan very exciting.
Commission chairperson Cheryl Sanders said she hopes the Tourist Development Council will be able to help fund the construction of the new building.
Commissioner Pinki Jackel said that if the state comes through with money for renovations at the Armory in Apalachicola that should free up Tourist Development money for the museum.
There is currently 350 thousand dollars in next year’s state budget earmarked for the Armory – but the budget still has to be approved by the Governor.
