CLEAN MARINAS HIGHLIGHTED ON NATIONAL MARINA DAY
~Support your local marina and enjoy shore-side and water-based activities~
TALLAHASSEE – Marinas across the nation celebrate "Welcome to the Water" on National Marina Day on Saturday, June 14. Supported by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Sustainable Initiatives and Clean Marina Program, Floridians are encouraged to join in on the fun.
“National Marina Day highlights the importance of clean marinas and responsible boating in Florida,” said DEP Clean Marina Program Administrator Brenda Leonard. “Our marine ecosystems are critical to our state’s environment and economy, and we want to recognize those facilities that go above and beyond to protect those resources.”
Florida has more than 2,000 marinas - the most of any state. Florida also has nearly 1 million registered motorized vessels and hosts several million visitors each year. Our $67.2-billion tourism industry is in part based on clear waters, world-class beaches and coral reefs. To date, 283 marinas have been recognized by the Clean Marina program, in addition to 43 boatyards and 19 designated clean retailers.
The Clean Marina program was launched as a voluntary partnership program between DEP and marinas to promote the health of Florida’s vitally important water resources. To earn the Clean Marina designation, marinas must implement a set of environmental Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to protect Florida’s waterways. These BMPs address serious environmental issues such as sensitive habitats, waste management, stormwater control, spill prevention and emergency preparedness.
"Welcome to the Water" on National Marina Day has been celebrated since 2001 to foster boating participation across America. Marina businesses and organizations host events across the country that help introduce the public to boating through on-water and landside activities. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will have outreach staff at National Marina Day events across the state. Stop by and visit at one of these locations.
