County commissioners are already finding ways to
spend 350 thousand dollars the state has earmarked for renovations for the Fort
Coombs Armory.
The funding will come from the Division of Historical
Resources and the county should be receiving draft agreements from the Division
regarding the money in mid-July.
This week the board discussed how to spend the money, and
the thought at this time is that it can pay for replacing the windows and
finishing a catering kitchen for the historic structure.
The county is currently
in the process of repairing and upgrading the 114 year old armory so it can be
used as a convention center and destination for private events like weddings.
The county is spending about 700 thousand dollars in
tourist development money to stabilize the building and fix some drainage
issues and to add about 40 tons of air conditioning to the armory.
The windows and warming kitchen were part of the
overall restoration plan but were not yet funded.
And there will be more work to do even after the
windows are replaced.
Completely renovating the building will cost nearly
2.4 million dollars.
