Franklin County commissioners are tightening the purse strings on non-profit groups

County Commissioners are going to require a little more information from some of the local non-profit groups that receive county tax dollars.
The county provides money to about 9 non-governmental groups including literacy, Franklin's Promise, the Transportation Disadvantaged program, Refuge House and Meals on Wheels.
They also provide some funding to the senior citizens center in Carrabelle.
Recently the county commission requested a full audit of the Franklin County Senior Citizens Council after complaints were made that the county money was being spent on activities other than what they were meant for.
The audit was unable to determine any detailed information regarding how County funds appropriated to the Senior Citizens Council were specifically used.
Commissioners, however, said they should probably start looking more closely at how all the non-governmental agencies spend county money.
Commissioners said they don’t want to micro-manage the groups, they just want to make sure that county money is used for programs that help citizens and not for salaries.
The commission has not yet voted on a specific action- but discussed requiring that each non-profit group provide a detailed list of how county money was spent each three months before it is allowed to get more money.

The County administrative director and the finance office should have a specific plan for the commission in a few weeks.
