PORT ST. JOE – Community members celebrate the beauty of the bay at the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve’s Bay Day celebration by participating in tram tours through the heart of the preserve, shoreline and kayak excursions, birding and nature walks, and a traditional low country boil. More than 160 attendees enjoyed the Bay Day celebration on Oct. 4, 2014, at the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve visitor’s center.
To kick off the Bay Day celebration, a free, educational astronomy night presentation and star-gazing walk was offered on Friday, Oct. 3. At the astronomy night presentation, guests learned fascinating facts and scientific principles about the planets and constellations.
The star-gazing walk following the presentation was a two-mile walk on mild terrain that was enjoyed by both children and adults. Telescopes were provided, although many guests brought their own to enjoy the night sky.
To close the Bay Day celebration, guests were invited to bask in the natural beauty of the Bay and learn about its history while taking a sunset cruise aboard a 60-foot, 44-passenger boat.
“We are so pleased at the level of community involvement at this event,” said Dylan Shoemaker, preserve manager. “Each year, we add more opportunities for those attending to enjoy the incredible natural resource of the state buffer preserve and the bay. Bay Day just keeps getting better and better.”
The St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve was established in 1995 to protect the surrounding uplands for preservation of the bay’s pristine natural resources and water quality. For more information about the preserve, please click here.
