Volunteers
are fanning out across the county this week to see how large the local homeless
population is.
Through
Friday The Big Bend Homeless Coalition is conducting a Point-In-Time Count of
the homeless.
This
is the first year since 2007 Franklin County has done a count and the
information collected will help make sure that needed resources come to
Franklin County to combat local homelessness.
There
are two targeted groups for the survey which includes people living on the
streets, or in trailer parks, motels, abandoned buildings or other places not
ordinarily used as regular sleeping accommodation for people.
The
survey also includes people facing eviction or who have been evicted and people
staying with a friend or relatives.
Veterans
are a main target of the count because of “The Zero: 2016 program” which has a
goal to end Veteran homelessness by the end of 2015, and to end chronic
homelessness in 2016.
If
you are considered homeless and would like to take the confidential survey, you
can call 850-792-9426
If
you are a homeless veteran or know a homeless veteran, call Charles Elliott at
the Franklin County Veterans Services office at 653-8096.
