Jennifer
Brown of Apalachicola was sentenced Wednesday to nearly 2 years in prison and
20 years probation for pocketing
hundreds of thousands of dollars in Franklin County probation payments.
Jennifer Brown
was an employee with a private company called Florida Probation Services.
The company
contracts with Franklin County to collect payments and monitors public service hours
for local misdemeanor probation cases.
Brown was
arrested in 2013 for pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars in probation
payments over a period of nearly 5 years.
She accomplished
it by reporting cash payments as public service hours worked and then keeping
the money.
The crime
went unnoticed until her aunt, Franklin County Clerk of Court Marcia Johnson,
noticed discrepancies and reported the situation to authorities.
Miss Brown
was sentenced on Wednesday to 23 months in prison as well as 20 years
probation.
She will also be required to make financial restitution for
218 thousand dollars.
Franklin County recently extended its contract with Florida
Probation Services for three years.
The company has agreed to have an external audit done every
year to insure that this type of crime doesn’t happen again.
