Sopchoppy man found dead at the base of a tree

An 84-year-old Sopchoppy man was discovered deceased by Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office deputies Monday, March 9 at 4:36 p.m. near a tree he was trimming in his yard, according to Sheriff Charlie Creel.

George Michael Winn was deceased at the base of the tree when deputies and Wakulla EMS arrived to administer aid. A ladder and chain saw were also discovered at the scene of the unattended death and a neighbor told investigators that he observed Winn trimming a tree earlier in the day. It appears Winn may have fallen off a ladder and suffered trauma to his head. An autopsy will be conducted by the Medical Examiner on Tuesday, March 10.
