Wakulla Environmental Institute - 13 Mile Brand: "Future Oysters are Available today in Apalachicola!"

After 12 months of research, hard work and tender loving care, the Wakulla Environmental Institute is delivering its first batch of oysters to the 13 Mile Brand Seafood Market on Water Street, in Apalachicola, located right next to the waterfront park.
800 of the sweetest, cleanest and saltiest oysters available anywhere will be on sale...for the first time...at 13 Mile Brand Seafood Market on Water Street...next to waterfront park...in Apalachicola... starting Friday morning at 9AM...until they are gone
13 Mile Brand Seafood Market on Water Street is open from 10AM-6PM every day but Sunday...including this Labor Day!
These oysters were grown right here in our own backyard...via the research, training and funding from the Wakulla Environmental Institute's oyster farming education program.
This is a part of the new farming program that will jump from 150,000 oysters this first year to over 3 million oysters next year and 10,000,000 the year after that.
The process for growing these oysters utilizes the full column of water...meaning from bottom to surface... focusing especially on the surface, where the nutrients are cleaner and the oysters are protected from bottom feeding predators like conks, crabs and sea urchins.
This "full column of water process" is utilized throughout the world and will be a key ingredient to the resurrection of our natural oyster beds for the future.
By utilizing this farming process, in conjunction with more responsible and sustainable harvesting of the traditional oyster beds, the future of Apalachicola Bay has a chance of returning to a healthy level of oyster production.
It is one of the simplest procedures to a safe and sustainable future...for oysters, jobs and environment.
Other Facts:

- Each oyster filters 50 gallons of water per day.
- Oysters are the primary catalyst for healthy and clean water.  All other shell fish and sea fish rely on oyster beds for their food source and health.
- 1 inch of oyster bed can absorb 1 foot of tide surge.
- 1 oyster lease puts 3 people back to work
- Potential 100+ new jobs next year via the new 38 leases opening up
- Over 1 million oysters harvested per each 1.5 acre lease.  (50 gallons filtered per oyster x 365days)
- It takes only 12 months for oysters to reach maturity in our Forgotten Coast waters (fastest in world).
- 13 Mile Seafood Market,  10-6 every day but Sunday.  Open Labor Day.
