Hengel to represent Franklin county on Big Bend Homeless Coalition

Sandi Hengel has been named to represent Franklin County on homeless issues with the Big Bend Homeless Coalition.

Miss Hengel works as the homeless liaison for the Franklin County school system – she already served as the county’s alternate to the Homeless Coalition.

She will fill the vacancy left by commissioner Pinki Jackel -  Miss Jackel represented the county on the Continuum of Care Facilitating Group.

That group is federally mandated to continue receiving HUD funding exceeding 1 million dollars to address homelessness in our area.

Under the group’s charter, each of the 8 county commissions in the Big Bend is required to name a member to the Board.

Miss Hengel said she plans to start planning the annual homeless count early this year to make sure it is as accurate as possible.

The homeless count is held every January and directly impacts how much funding Franklin County receives to deal with its homeless problem.

Miss Hengel said that at this time there are over 200 students in the local school system who are considered homeless.
