52nd annual Florida Seafood festival draws thousands to Apalachicola

Thousands of people came to Apalachicola over the weekend to enjoy fresh seafood and hear Country music artist Tyler Farr at the 51st Florida Seafood Festival.
And beautiful weather didn’t hurt either.

As always the oyster eating and oyster shucking contests proved to be extremely popular.
The winner in the men’s oyster eating division was Gerald Goodman of Southport who ate 324 oysters in 15 minutes.
This was Goodman’s 3rd year in a row winning the competition; last year he ate 245 oysters.

Charles Gunter of Crawfordville came in second after eating 288 oysters and Marvin Walters of Midway, Florida came in third after downing 240 oysters.
The winner in the women’s division was Sarah Shelley of Carrabelle who downed 119 oysters, and second place went to Starla Gibson of Perry who ate 89.

This year’s oyster shucking champ was Honor Allen of Panama City who shucked 2 dozen oysters in 2 minutes and 41 seconds.
He won an all expense paid trip to the national oyster shucking competition in Maryland.
