Marshal House nominated by the state of Florida to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places

The Marshall House on Little St. George Island will be nominated by the state of Florida to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is a list maintained by the National Park Service which includes historical or archaeological properties that are considered worthy of preservation because of their local, statewide or national significance.

The county has received word from the Florida Department of State that the Florida National register review Board has recommended that the Marshall Field Station be formally nominated.

It generally takes about 45 days for a decision to be made as to whether the property will be listed.

The Marshall House was built in the early 1940’s by Herbert Marshall – it’s one of the earliest cracker style homesteads in Franklin County.

It was privately owned and used by the Marshall family until 1976 and was purchased by the state of Florida in 1977.

It’s now used to house researchers and school groups visiting Little St. George Island.

Florida has over 1,600 listings on the National Register, including 275 historical districts and 170 archaeological sites.

Earlier this year the Cape San Blas lighthouse in Port St. Joe was added to the National register.
