Franklin County rejected an
ordinance this week banning the use of air guns, sling shots and bows and
arrows in Lanark Village.
The board was asked to consider
the rule in response to complaints from Lanark Village residents who said that
children in the neighborhood are abusing pellet guns and BB guns and there is
currently nothing anyone can do about it.
Lanark resident Richard Fravel
said this has been an ongoing problem and when the sheriff’s office has been
called they have not been able to take any action.
Commissioners, however, felt that
banning bb guns and sling shots was going too far.
They said that the parents should
be held responsible for their children.
Commissioner Smokey Parrish said
that he grew up with BB guns and slingshots but he never shot anyone’s windows
because he knew what his parents would do about it.
The commission voted against the
ordinance, but recommended that the children’s parents be notified when their
kids are acting up and if the kids do get destructive that the sheriff’s
department be called to deal with criminal mischief which is already a crime.
