Franklin County commissioners have
approved a penny increase in the county’s gas tax.
The gas tax will move from 5 cents a
gallon to 6 cents a gallon beginning in January, 2017.
The additional penny a gallon will
mean the gas tax will raise about 50 thousand dollars more a year for a total
of about 300 thousand dollars a year for road paving and improvements.
But that was not the main reason the
county approved the increase.
By increasing the local gas tax to 6
cents a gallon, Franklin County becomes eligible for potentially million of
dollars in state road paving funds, which means that local roads could be paved
or repaired more often than is currently happening.
The county is
doing some local road paving this year, but it’s been 6 years since the last
paving project.
Once the tax increase takes effect
in January, Franklin County will be eligible for a 100% funded Department of
Transportation paving program called SCRAP which will provide much needed
funding for larger paving projects.
Franklin County was one of the last
counties in Florida to impose a minimum of 6 cents local gas tax.
The tax
increase did have one additional impact.
Because of the
increase, the local gas tax is now extended for an additional 20 years.
The tax was set
to expire in December of 2017 unless the county renewed it.
