Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) has resumed normal operations at all institutions following disturbances reported in four North Florida institutions last week and through the weekend.
Secretary Julie Jones said, “Due to the unwavering commitment and training of our staff we were able to quickly and effectively address disturbances at four of our 49, major institutions. I’m incredibly proud of our team’s response and their effort to ensure the safety of both inmates and their fellow officers. They worked tirelessly throughout the last several days and nights to protect our state in many challenging situations.”
The Deputy Secretary of Institutions will be conducting a full investigation into each disturbance that occurred. In each incident, multiple rapid response teams from neighboring institutions responded to bolster staffing.
Several inmates identified in the disturbances were transferred to other regional institutions and will be disciplined in accordance with procedure.
Holmes Correctional Institution: A major disturbance occurred on Wednesday, September 7, involving several hundred inmates housed in multiple dorms. One inmate on inmate injury occurred during the incident. No staff were injured. Visitation was cancelled and lockdown continued through the weekend.
Gulf Annex Correctional Institution: Following a major disturbance in multiple dorms on Friday, September 9, the institution was placed on lockdown. One inmate received minor injuries. No staff were injured. Visitation was cancelled and lockdown continued through the weekend.
Mayo Correctional Institution: Two dorms were involved in work stoppage and attempting to incite disturbances on September 9 and 10. The institution was placed on lockdown. No injuries to staff or inmates were reported. Visitation was cancelled and lockdown continued through the weekend.
Jackson Correctional Institution: One dorm was involved in a disturbance on Saturday, September 10, following a serious inmate on inmate assault. The institution was able to quickly address the situation and resume normal operations. In addition to the inmate injured in the assault, one inmate received minor injuries. No staff were injured.
