Franklin County opposes plan to spray herbicide in the Tate's Hell State Forest

Franklin County Commissioners are concerned about a state plan to spray herbicide in the Tate's Hell State Forest.

The Division of Forestry intends to do an aerial spraying of herbicide on about 500 acres near the New River and 39 acres near Crooked River in late November.

Franklin County does have rules regarding where herbicides can be used, though this spraying does not violate any of the county's ordinances.

Commissioners, however, are still concerned, particularly with aerial spraying because of the danger it poses to wildlife and other animals.

Commissioner Cheryl Sanders said that is one of the reasons the county doesn't allow aerial spraying for mosquitoes.

She said that in the past some hunting dogs died after they were caught in a spray zone.

County officials said there is likely little they can do to stop the herbicide spraying but did agree to voice their concerns to the Division of Forestry in case it makes a difference.
