Franklin County Commissioners last week approved an ordinance banning camping or living at any of the county-owned parks, fishing piers or boar ramps

Franklin County Commissioners last week approved an ordinance banning camping or living at any of the county-owned parks, fishing piers or boar ramps.

The ordinance covers 19 parks, ramps and and piers in the unincorporated areas of Franklin County.

That includes the parking lots at the 19 locations.

The county attorney began work on the ordinance last November after commissioners noticed a problem with people parking their campers on public property.

There was a specific incident with one camper that spent a night at the Abercrombie Boat ramp and when asked to leave moved to the Buddy Ward Seafood Park and spent three nights there.

Last week the board approved an ordinance that bans people from camping in public spaces like parks to make sure that parks and boat ramps are clean and available to everyone.

A first violation of the rule comes with a 100 dollar fine; a second violation is a 2nd degree misdemeanor.
