Restoring the Gulf: 10 Years After Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

This month NOAA is commemorating 10 years since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. NOAA and other federal and Gulf state partners are working to support restoration and recovery of the Gulf’s natural resources using the $20.8 billion environmental damage settlement.

That is the foundation of NOAA Fisheries’ educational program called “An Incredible Journey.” The series, launched in 2018, includes an illustrated children’s book, a board game, and a 10-lesson curriculum. It can be downloaded for free in English and Spanish.

These turtles—known as honu‘ea in Hawaiian—make up one of the most endangered sea turtle populations in the world. A new StoryMap details their struggles and the team of conservationists working diligently to save them.

Let’s Get More Shellfish in the Water

NOAA Fisheries established the National Shellfish Initiative in partnership with shellfish farmers and shellfish restoration organizations to increase populations of bivalve shellfish (oysters, clams, and mussels). Through both sustainable commercial production and restoration activities, the initiative aims to get more shellfish back in the water.
