Apalachicola National Forest reopens boat ramps

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 8, 2020 – The USDA Forest Service will open five boat ramps on the Apalachicola National Forest at noon on Saturday, May 9.

After conducting risk assessments, Forest Service officials determined the following boat ramps can reopen for public use: Wood Lake, Porter Landing, Whitehead Landing, Mack Landing and Hickory Landing.

Nearby developed recreation areas and campgrounds may not be available for use. Trails and trailheads remain open, but restrooms are shut down. Please remember to avoid congregating at trailheads and parking areas and refrain from gathering in groups of ten or more.

“Closing any Forest Service site or facility is a difficult decision, and we are committed to reopening them as soon as we safely can,” said Kelly Russell, National Forests in Florida Forest Supervisor. “We know the importance of the Apalachicola National Forests to the community and we want people to use and enjoy the forest again. Forest Service officials are working on phased plans to reopen sites and facilities but protecting our visitors and employees remains our highest priority.”

The Apalachicola National Forest continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation. Please remember to review current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with local and state guidelines for social distancing and cloth face coverings.
