The Franklin County Sheriff's office will begin a texting and driving enforcement program this week

The Franklin County Sheriff's office will begin a texting and driving enforcement program this week.

Sheriff AJ Smith said the sheriff's office will take a zero tolerance approach to texting and driving, using officers in unmarked vehicles to catch people texting, and marked patrol cars to stop and ticket them.

Texting and driving is a primary offense, which means you can be pulled over for it.

Texting is one of the most dangerous driver distractions since it takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel and your mind off of driving.

The penalty for first-time violators for texting and driving is $30 plus court costs, which could add up to more than $100.

If you are caught texting and driving in a school zone or work zone you face a $60 fine, court costs and three points added to the driver’s license.

The texting and driving enforcement will continue through the summer tourist season.
