Franklin County commissioners have agreed to hold a public hearing to consider making changes to its beach flag ordinance

Franklin County commissioners have agreed to hold a public hearing to consider making changes to its beach flag ordinance.

The county currently has daily beach flags for Alligator Point, St. George Island and Carrabelle Beach.

The daily beach flag color is based on daily weather information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

County attorney Michael Shuler said the major change to the ordinance would be to remove Carrabelle beach from the flagging system.

Carrabelle Beach is on the bay and he said it doesn't make a lot of sense to have it under the same rules that are based on weather conditions for the Gulf of Mexico.

Commission chairman Ricky Jones said this year there have been 375 thousand views of the county's beach flags, through the county website, the TDC app and other ways people can look at the flag system in the county.

The problem is that NOAA doesn't track Carrabelle Beach because its not on the Gulf so the flag there is being put up by the county, and it is arbitrary.
