Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner today thanks to a hundreds of volunteers and a lot of work

Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner today thanks to a hundreds of volunteers and a lot of work.
282 volunteers came out September 18th and collected 11,063 pounds of trash from local beaches, islands, bay, and river during this year's annual Coastal Cleanup event.
Cleanups were done at 18 sites and volunteers removed over 311 bags of trash which was primarily the type of trash you would expect to see including cans, bottles, cigarette butts, plastic, Styrofoam, fishing gear and rope.
But every year volunteers find a few interesting items too.
This year they found a case of unopened hot dogs, a fire extinguisher, a tiny metal cowbell and a Cadillac hubcap.
They also found a hollow plastic pig, a toilet, a deep freezer, a bag of recently caught mullet, more than 233 10-pound aquaculture baskets, and a Tervis tumbler with the logo “Life Is Better On A Boat.”
The Franklin County Coastal Cleanup is sponsored by the Apalachicola Riverkeeper, the Ocean Conservancy, and the Franklin County Departments of Parks & Recreation and Solid Waste & Recycling
