The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is considering allowing a limited fishing season for Goliath Grouper and will discuss the issue at their regular meeting on October 6th and 7th in St. Augustine.
Goliath grouper can get up to 800 pounds and 8 feet long.
Right now you can only catch-and-release Goliath groupers, but that could change.
At its May meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission directed staff to develop a proposed draft rule that includes a limited, highly regulated harvest.
The Commission also directed staff to continue ongoing efforts that recognize goliath’s role in the ecosystem and promote stock rebuilding while allowing access to goliath through catch-and-release, ecotourism and dive viewing opportunities.
If a season is approved it would be the first time is almost 30 years Florida fishermen could target the species.
The FWC also plans to discuss redfish and shark fishing during the meeting.
