Franklin county commissioners this month rejected two bids to repair the road leading to the St. George Island fishing pier.
The road was damaged in 2018 during hurricane Michael and needed repairs include replacing rip-rap, repairing the guardrail and ribbon curb, and patching the asphalt roadway.
The 2 bids ranged from about 170 thousand dollars to just over 250 thousand dollars – unfortunately the county only has about 110 thousand dollars to pay for the repairs.
In this case the county can also not request additional funding for cost overruns as the damage was categorized as a ‘small project’.
Instead the county will have to reduce the scope of the work to get the costs within the available budget and county workers will likely have to do some of the demolition and roadway removal to lower the costs even further.
